WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dozens of people spent Saturday afternoon protesting for stricter gun laws right outside of an NRA fundraiser.

The group, Carolinians for Sensible Gun Laws, based in Wilmington, held a rally to create greater awareness for the need for gun control regulation and reform.

The rally was held near the Coastline Convention Center, on Nutt Street, in downtown Wilmington.

Organizers chose that location because icoincides with the fundraising event for the NRA, at the Best Western Hotel/Convention Center.

Protesters brought signs and chanted songs, urging drivers and pedestrians to stand up for stricter gun laws.

The mission of the group is to educate and advocate for sensible gun laws at the state and national levels.

The group opposes most of the positions taken by the NRA on the issues of gun regulation, legislation, and reform.

It advocates for a ban on assault weapons, gun trafficking, and armor-piercing bullets.

It further advocates for state and federal regulations and legislation aimed at limiting gun magazine capacity and calls for mandatory background checks for all gun sales in the U.S., including gun shows, online, and private sales/transfers of all weapons.

Bert Blake is a gun owner and a former member of the NRA, but now he's changed sides.

"We want to see stronger gun laws," said Blake. "We can't afford to wait for the next Sandy Hook tragedy or any other mass casualty."

Blake pointed out that they are not against owning guns, rather, tighter gun laws.
