Head of NHC GOP joins those calling for commissioner's resignation

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Political leaders in New Hanover County are reacting today to County Commission Chairman, Woody White's request for fellow commissioner Brian Berger to leave the board.

Rhonda Amoroso, the Chairwoman of the NHC GOP, told us she agrees with White.  She thinks that Berger should step down from his position on the board.

Amoroso said that Berger has been a constant distraction and called his behavior "creepy."

Amoroso says that some folks are afraid to speak out against Berger for fear of what he might do.

Berger said he has no plans to resign. He told our Ashlea Kosikowski he would come to our studios for an interview Friday night; however, he never showed up. He called later apologizing and said he would be willing to speak to us in a recorded interview at a meeting Saturday morning of the NHC GOP. Our Ben Powell attended the meeting and said that Berger was not in attendance.

This all started Friday morning when White sent an email to Berger and other commissioners asking him to seek help after posing a security risk to Governor Pat McCrory Thursday.

White hopes Berger resigns from his position with the board so he can spend his time getting support from his family and friends and seek help.

While a decision has not yet been made, White said commissioners are considering filing a non-domestic violence restraining order against Berger to ensure the safety of county commissioners and citizens.
