NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Area beach mayors are asking the state for more money for shallow inlet dredging.
Currently, there is a proposal for a 50-50 split of funds to be used for shallow inlet dredging.
Under that proposal, the state would cover 50 percent of costs using boat registration fees.
The state wants local municipalities to cover the other 50 percent.
But Kure Beach Mayor Dean Lambeth says that will take too much money away from the local municipalities.
Along with Mayor Cignotti from Wrightsville Beach and Mayor Lewis from Carolina Beach, Mayor Lambeth is asking for a change in that proposal.
Beach mayors are sending a resolution for a 75-25 split.
That resolution will be sent to Rep. Ted Davis, who will then take it to the county to have it signed before submitting it to the house.
