WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Animal Control took a dog into custody Wednesday and charged its owner with a citation after the dog allegedly injured a horse.

According to Cpl. Kevin A. Smith with the Wilmington Police Department, a pit bull that was with its owner but not on a leash attacked two WPD horses while the mounted officers were passing through Second and Chestnut streets.

The dog latched onto one of the horses while officers attempted to get their mounts away, resulting in puncture wounds and scratches on one of the horses.

However, after a vet examined the horse, it was determined that serious injury did not occur.

The dog also bit the foot of one of the officers, but no injuries were sustained.

The dog was then taken into custody and the owner was charged on a citation for not having the dog on a leash.
