PLYMOUTH, MN (KARE/CNN) - A billboard ad is creating some rear-end reaction.

March is colorectal and colon cancer awareness month. That's why billboards are popping up with an edgy message, but one that can be life-saving.

Steve Copland's office is right next to the "Check your butt" billboard.

"Every time I have to walk out to help a customer, it's right there," he said.

The in-your-face, derriere declaration is all part of a campaign through the Minnesota Department of Health.

"We didn't want to walk over that line, but we're not afraid to walk right up to it," Laura Friedenberg, a MDH educator, said.

Communication staff say they are behind the message, a campaign urging people to schedule a colonoscopy.

"Our billboards try to do that in a tasteful manner, so try to get your attention but also help you laugh about it and take the tension away from it," Friedenberg said. "The reason were doing it is to get people talking and to increase our screening rates."

The posterior poster isn't pretty, but Copland says he'll file this one away for the future.

"It's definitely something to keep us in the back of our mind, you know, get it checked out," he said.
