Monster Energy drinks will no longer be sold as dietary supplements. (Source: CNN)(CNN) - Monster Energy is revamping its drink labels to include caffeine content. In addition, the popular drinks will be sold as 'beverages' not as 'dietary supplements'.
The Food and Drug Administration said manufacturers of dietary supplements are required to report adverse events linked to their product.
The same requirement does not apply to products sold as beverages or food.
The company's spokeswoman said the product itself won't change, but the drinks will be marketed simply as beverages.
Monster said it's committed to being responsible and wants to be transparent about the product ingredients.
The company recently joined the American Beverage Association which recommended the change.
The energy drink industry has been under scrutiny because of several deaths, though the FDA hasn't said any of the products were responsible for or contributed to any health issues.
