Barry Nelder is the newest member of the Kure Beach Stormwater and Environmental Committee.
Town leaders approved Nelder's appointment to the alternate position at their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday March 19.
Mayor Dean Lambeth said there was no objection from town council or the public about Nelder's new position.
"We've forgiven him," said Lambeth. "Everyone deserves a second chance."
Court records show that a judge dismissed the charges against Nelder on January 23, 2013.
He resigned after his arrest in August 2011, and commissioners did not fill his seat because of the upcoming election. Nelder ran for office, but did not win.
