KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Sunday, Kure Beach Police held a medicine drop event. Officers said it's very important for people to drop off old or unused medicines instead of throwing them away themselves.

Authorities said if old medicines are flushed down the toilet they can harm the environment.

Officers also said there has been a national and local trend of prescription drug abuse, and they hope the medicine drop off will help to curb that problem. They say, lately in Kure Beach, prescription drugs are taken in home invasions.

"The prescription medicines are either targeted and all the other items are left, or the prescriptions go with everything else that may have been stolen," said Sgt. Jason Cummings. "We are seeing it constantly in traffic stops, or if we execute search warrants."

By 12:30 p.m., the police department had collected 4,000 tablets of medicine.
