According to police, an officer saw the vehicle speeding down Fourth Street prior to the crash. The officer had notified dispatch he was going to make a traffic stop when he noticed the car hit a house.
The homeowner, Edie Senter, was upstairs at the time. She said the car first hit a tree that she planted 11 years ago when her daughter was born.
"We told her this morning, Ella, your tree saved us cause the police told us it took the initial impact of the car," Senter said. "So, it helped the house not get as much damage."
Police say Nathan Gregory Leemhuis, 22 of Wilmington, was arrested and charged with DWI and reckless driving.
Leemhuis posted bond and has been released.
