PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Pender County Animal Shelter failed its inspection Monday, according to an inspection report.

The inspection was random, and the shelter, located in Burgaw, currently houses 44 dogs and 28 cats.

Under the inspection categories "Food and bedding protected," "Veterinary care when needed," "Enclosures in sound repair," and "Build./grnds., clean & repair," the results listed next to each were labeled as "Not acceptable."

Among other things, the report shows the following:

  • 18 sick cats, with matted eyes and nasal mucus, that had not received medical care were subsequently euthanized during the inspection
  • Two cats were held in traps from 3/8/13 to 3/11/13 without a litter pan, feces was noted on the floor where they sat.
  • Cat waste was found inside an outdoor food/bedding storage building.
  • Holes in the walls of indoor dog kennels, dogs were noted urinating and sticking their feet through the holes.
  • Seven cats were in one kennel with two littler pans (the ratio is one pan per three cats)

There will be a follow-up inspection in two weeks.
