COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT/AP) – Officials at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro are investigating the death of a 15-month-old toddler found in Columbus County.

According to deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office, the investigation centers around a man in the Air Force who attempted suicide.

An Airforce wife who knew Theurer said he and his wife, Amy, were getting a divorce. She said Amy left the baby in the care of his father, but days later she realized something was wrong.

Officials say there are allegations the man found his baby dead in a crib and dumped the body in Columbus County.

The Goldsboro News-Argus reports that Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Senior Airman Matthew Theurer is charged by U.S. Air Force investigators with voluntary manslaughter, negligent homicide and murder. He is currently being held in the Sampson County Pre-Confinement Facility.

According to Sheriff Chris Batten, the incident is being investigated by officials at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The 4th Fighter Wing Public Affairs office has released no further details because it says the investigation is ongoing.
