NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Despite Congressman Mike McIntyre winning re-election just four months ago, election fever is already surrounding his 7th Congressional District seat.
Last month, New Hanover County commissioner Jonathan Barfield announced he's going to run for the seat. Now there is speculation in some circles that McIntyre could run for the North Carolina US Senate seat.
If he did, that could put him in a primary against fellow democrat Kay Hagan who currently holds the position.
"Right now, we are waiting on the courts to rule on the congressional district lines," said McIntyre. "I'm focused on my job in the United States Congress and to talk about any campaigns is far out the field right now. Because right now, we have to wait and see what the courts are going to do. I'm excited to just start the new session of congress and that's my job."
A senate run isn't completely out of character for McIntyre. You might remember he briefly flirted with running for governor last year after Beverly Perdue announced she was retiring. McIntyre is currently serving his 9th term in congress.
