BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office is using Facebook to warn residents about a potential scam in the area.
According to a post on the sheriff's office Facebook page, someone claming to be with the Publisher's Clearing House is leaving messages stating you have won cash or a car, but you must go to Walmart to get a check made out to them.
The sheriff's office said the number they leave to return their call is based in Jamaica and is subject to the international calling rate, which can be as much as $20 for 10 minutes.
Please report anything unusual to the sheriff's office.
