WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Christian MacDonald allowed two run on four hits while Michael Bass and Corey Dick added two hits apiece as UNCW completed a sweep of VCU on Sunday with a 3-2 win at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 9-6 overall and 9-4 at home with the one-run win. VCU saw its overall mark dip to 9-3 and 2-3 on the road.
MacDonald (2-0) held the Rams scoreless until the eighth when Rams broke through for two runs on a two-out double by James Bunn off reliever Kelly Secrest. MacDonald walked two and struck out one.
CU's Ryan Farrar (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite turning in an impressive performance of his own. Farrar allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits and a walk. He finished with four strikeouts.
No VCU hitter had more than one hit on the afternoon.
Up next: The Seahawks host Elon on Mar. 12 at 5 p.m. and Coastal Carolina on Mar. 13 for a 4 p.m. start.
How it happened: With the game scoreless in entering the sixth, Bass led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Abshire. Hunter Ridge reached safely on catcher's interference and with two outs, Ryan LaGrange and Dick plated runs with RBI singles giving UNCW a 2-0 lead it wouldn't surrender.
On the mound: MacDonald finished off an impressive weekend for the Seahawk starting staff in picking up his second win of the season. He lowered his ERA to 3.47 and kept VCU off balance, recording 12 ground ball outs. UNCW starters posted a 1.48 ERA on the weekend and held VCU to a .232 batting average. With runners on base, UNCW pitchers posted a .205 opponent batting average.
Notes: UNCW Head Coach Mark Scalf moved to within one of reaching the 700 career-win mark (699-543-1) … Michael Bass extended his hitting streak to 11 games and his on base streak to 19 … Justin Livengood nailed down his first career save, retiring the Rams in order in the ninth … The Seahawks improved to 46-32 all-time against VCU … UNCW is 4-2 in one-run games … Ryan LaGrange hit .636 for the weekend with seven hits, including a home run, he scored twice and knocked in five.
