NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - As part of National Severe Weather Preparedness Week, the Ham or Amateur Radios in New Hanover County were tested.
Officials say the radios work even when all other forms of communication like cell phones stop working. They say during a natural disaster, it's important to be able to communicate with several groups such as the National Weather Service and the Red Cross.
"When all else fails, amateur radios can get the message through," said Stephen Russ. "When the storm really hits and cell phones, land lines and the Internet all goes down, Ham Radio operates can operate.
Russ says in an area like Wilmington, which gets a lot of hurricanes and tornados, testing is important. He says the tests proved everything is working as it should.
