JACKSONVILLE, NC (WECT) - A new monument was unveiled Friday just outside of the Warrior Hope and Care Center in Jacksonville, NC.

The center is a new facility which provides care and rehabilitation for wounded Marines.

The monument is based on a photo taken by AP photographer Lucian Read called Hell House. Sculptor John Phelps, whose son was killed in Iraq in 2004, says the sculpture took more than a year to complete.

The monument features Lance Corporals Christopher Marquez and Dane Shaffer. They are carrying 1st Sgt. Bradley Kasal out of deadly firefight.

The monument is 10 feet tall and 13 feet wide.
