CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – Some safety changes are on the way to Snow's Cut Park in Carolina Beach thanks to erosion.

According to New Hanover County spokesman Charles Smith, safety and stability concerns prompted the park to remove the gazebo and get rid beach access in January.

Smith said the erosion to the banks at the park is an environmental issue that continues to affect the park. The width of the waterway has more than doubled since its construction in the late 1920s. The county estimates about two to five feet of the park are eroded per year.

Several agencies including the county, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources have tried to stop the erosion. But, so far an affordable solution hasn't been found.

Smith said the county will continue to monitor the park to make sure it's safe for visitors and make any adjustments if conditions change.
