WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The North Carolina Highway Patrol and Subway held a safety event Thursday, at Laney High School, to teach students about the dangers of texting and driving.
In addition, students learned about other distractions on the road and why it is important to pay attention when they are behind the wheel.
Students heard from a mother who lost her daughter in a texting and driving car accident.
"I don't get to see my child," said Tracy Carroll. "My child didn't come home to me, because I didn't instill in her about the texting. I should have been more firm about this whole cell phone deal and maybe, maybe she would still be here today."
Local high schools with the most signed pledges, from students agreeing to not text and drive, will be awarded free Subway for a day at their school.
