NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – No charges will be filed
against a stepfather who accidentally shot his three-year-old step son Monday afternoon.
According to the sheriff's office, the stepfather shot the
child in the leg while attempting to put a safety on a small caliber rifle.
He and his wife called 911 while they were driving the
three-year-old to the hospital. The stepfather originally told 911 operators
someone outside had shot his son.
"I'm on route to the hospital coming from Monkey Junction. My
son was just shot in the woods behind my house by somebody out there," the stepfather told 911 operators.
According to the 911 call, the child was shot in his upper
thigh, near the groin area. He told the 911 operator that his sons were outside
playing in the woods when the three-year-old was shot.
"My 10-year-old and 3-year-old were playing out in the woods
and they come running in the house and he's bleeding out of his leg saying somebody
shot him," the stepfather claimed on the call. "I could hear the shots, but I didn't
know they were out in the woods."
The stepfather, however, later changed his story and
admitted to the accident, according to the sheriff's office.
Officials say the little boy is in stable condition and is
expected to be okay and no charges will be filed.
