UNCW Press Release
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – San Diego plated two runs in the 10th inning on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly to back a 19-strikeout performance from its pitchers to edge UNCW, 2-0, on Saturday at Brooks Field.
The Toreros improved to 6-4 with the win and 2-0 on the weekend. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped back to .500 at 5-5.
Trevor Bayless (1-0) picked up the win, striking out two in 1 and 1/3 innings of hitless relief. Max Homick picked up his first save of the season, fanning the only two batters he faced.
Justin Livengood (0-1) was saddled with the loss despite a strong outing in relief.
Hunter Ridge and Chris Woolley led UNCW and USD, respectively, with two hits.
Up Next: The Seahawks close out the weekend with a 2 p.m. start against Gardner-Webb.
How It Happened: Dillon Checkal led off the 10th with a double down the left field line that just stayed fair and would come around to score one batter later on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt. Woolley, who reached safely on the error, would score the second run on a sacrifice fly by Dillon Haupt later in the inning.
On The Bump: USD pitchers recorded a season-high 19 strikeouts, which tied a UNCW record set in 2000 at Coastal Carolina. USD starter Dylan Covey struck out 12 in six innings of work. UNCW's Ramsey matched Covey with shutout baseball for his 6 and 2/3 innings of work. Ramsey dropped his ERA to 2.33 and has not allowed an earned run in his last 14 and 2/3 innings. Covey's ERA fell to 3.21.
Notes: UNCW dropped to 2-1 in extra inning games … It was also the second time it had been blanked this season (2/15, Va. Tech) … Michael Bass extended his on-base streak to 12 games, dating back to 2012 … The last time UNCW struck out at least 18 times was against William & Mary in the 2003 CAA Tournament when major leaguers Chris Ray and Bill Bray each struck out nine Seahawks in a 12-inning UNCW victory … Both teams combined to strand 19 runners on base … USD was 0-17 with runners on base while the Seahawks were 1-12 … Neither team had a hit in a RBI situation (USD – 0-14; UNCW – 0-6) … The Seahawks face Gardner-Webb on Sunday for the first time since 1976.
