WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - On Saturday, area students took science and math to a whole new level.

A Bottle Rocket challenge was one  46 events in the Regional North Carolina Science Olympiad event.

Nearly 1,000 middle and high schoolers from Bladen, Brunswick, Pender, Columbus and New Hanover County spent the day at UNCW.

They competed in all types of activities that tested their science and math skills in unique ways. Volunteers say they hope it gets kids interested in the subject.

"If they can stay interested in it in high school, and then major in it in college and then go into one of those careers, and then go into one of those careers, you hear of a lot of people offering those types of jobs, so it's good if they can stay interested," said Cory Pate, a volunteer.

Other events included races with cars made from mouse traps, a glider launch, and examining a crime scene to identify rocks and minerals.
