LORAIN, OH (WOIO) -
Herbie, an abused and neglected dog who won the hearts of all who heard his story, had died.
In December, Lorain Police found Herbie was found weighing only 25 pounds when he should have weighed three times that. He also suffered a fractured skull and older injuries.
Officers believe that the dog had been caged, neglected and deserted. His eyes were severely swollen and forced shut, and he couldn't walk or stand up.
Yesterday, a caretaker for Herbie posted an update on a site seeking justice for the dog saying, "This is the hardest message I have ever had to post."
"Herbie has gone to the bridge. He fought hard to recover from his abuse, but the cancer was too much for him to bear. He had stopped eating and was losing weight and muscle. These last two weeks with him were very hard on me, watching this magnificent animal begin to waste away from the dog he had become under Dr. Woods care and my love," he continued.
"I did not wish to see him start to suffer. In his way, he told me yesterday that he was ready to leave us."
Herbie died in his caretaker's arms at approximately 2:00 p.m.
