Local schools brace for cuts as a result of ‘sequestration'

NEW HANOVER AND BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Local schools are bracing for cuts as a result of the across-the-board government spending cuts, known as the sequestration.

At Brunswick County Schools, the impact is anticipated to be $388,472, which equals 5.3% of the district's budget.

That is also the equivalent of 7 positions.

Jessica Swencki, Director of Quality Assurance & Community Engagement at Brunswick County Schools, explained that the district still doesn't know exactly where they will make the cuts.

However, she said the federal dollars support exceptional children services and programs for economically disadvantaged students, which are mandated by the federal government.

Swencki said the cuts will take effect in July.

At New Hanover County Schools, Mary Hazel Small, the NHCS Chief Financial Officer, has been keeping in touch with the Department of Public Instruction. She said they wouldn't know until the order was signed what the immediate impact would be on federal aid for the district.
