SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Film crews are spending more time in Southport. This time they're in the area for the upcoming CBS television series Under the Dome.
According to film permits, four cast members and about two dozen extras will be used for the scenes filmed Friday.
"It's the start of more to come," said Southport Mayor Pro Tem Mary Ellen Poole.
Poole said local businesses are excited to have more filming in the area.
Permits say they will be filming in four locations throughout the day: Howe Street, Nash Street, West Bay Street, and East Bay Street. Drivers should be aware of possible intermittent road closures in those areas.
Film crews plan to use wind machines to blow trees, leaves and flags at various locations throughout the day, according to film permits.
Under the Dome is a TV series based on the 2009 Stephen King novel with the same name. It takes place in a small New England town that is suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by transparent dome.
Businesses we talked to said it's been the busiest off-season they've had in years.
"January and February is not normally a busy time for us," said Ricky Evans, a business owner. "But this has been the busiest off season in the past 15 years."
The series has set up production in Wilmington, NC, and it will premiere on CBS in June.
