Former congressional candidate Ilario Pantano speaks about sequestration, national debt

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dozens of people joined the Concerned Veterans for America Thursday to listen to a presentation from former congressional candidate, Ilario Pantano.

In front of a large crowd at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building in Wilmington, Pantano spoke about the sequestration, national debt and other problems that he says are hurting this country.

Pantano says he wanted to detail some truths about the upcoming sequestration and the national debt.

If the sequester goes through Friday, as planned, multiple government agencies could see massive cuts in their federal funding including groups like the CVA.

Pantano says he's concerned about the automatic spending cuts, but he thinks the government has to do something before it's too late.

"Spending money is a national security issue," said Pantano.  "There is a spending problem in this country."

"These cuts are very painful and will cause a contraction in time," said Pantano.  "But if we don't address the spending problems, we will be back at square one again.  We need a long term fix to the problem."

"One of my concerns in this fight against debt is that the big dog will always get theirs, unless we can reform the process."

One of his biggest concerns is our military.  Pantano says these cuts will make our army smaller than it was before WW2 and our navy will be smaller than it was before WW1.

Pantano says his goal today was to give people some insight into the political gears of how decision makers operate.
