WINNABOW, NC (WECT) – Fire crews are investigating the cause of a structure fire in the Winnabow area of Brunswick County.
Six fire units responded to a mobile home fire on the 700 block of Caison Loop Road. The call came in just after 1:30 Wednesday morning.
According to the Winnabow fire department, a resident was asleep when the fire started in the bedroom. It took firefighters a few minutes to get the fire under control.
Scottie Lumpkin, the resident of the home, was taken to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center with minor burns to the legs and neck.
"I was sleeping and just heard a loud pop.. sounded like a breaker or something," said Lumpkin. "Then it was just immediately fire up the wall. I tried putting it out but it just kept growing and growing. So I grabbed the dog and cat and got out."
Lumpkin's wife was at work at the time.
While the fire was contained to the bedroom, officials say the home is likely a total loss due to smoke damage.
The Winnabow fire department is leaning towards it being an accidental fire, but that cause has not yet been confirmed.
