WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Two coastal communities have smoking bans on the beach, but their local issue need statewide support.
Representative Ted Davis said he's working on the bans initiated by Wrightsville and Carolina Beaches. He said it's not as simple as passing a local bill like he had hoped.
Davis said he's polling fellow legislators. If he doesn't' have enough support for the bill before he writes it, he'll let his constituents know the issue is over.
"I just sit them down like I always do and tell them the truth," explained Davis. "I'll be happy to explain the obstacles I've had, and why I don't think it'll fly or explain what we've done and why it will fly."
Davis said the issue is not the smoking ban itself, instead it's the ability for local governments to enforce their laws on state property.
