CAROLINA BEACH (WECT) – Despite rain throughout the day, the 9th annual Polar Plunge returned to Carolina Beach. Thousands of participants took part in plunge into the cold ocean, ran in the newly adopted 5K run. A number of supporters dressed up as part of the event's costume contest.
All proceeds raided from Saturday's event will be donated to the local Special Olympics chapter of New Hanover County.
Special Olympics of New Hanover County supports more than 500 athletes with Intellectual Disabilities in year-round training programs in 11 different sports and competing in local, regional and state-level events.
