WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Officials with Wilmington Shuttle, a new bus company that will be a division of Cape Fear Limo, say that this spring, they will start running a new route from major apartment complexes around UNCW's campus to downtown Wilmington.
Students say they are excited about the idea, since right now, there isn't a route that goes from the school to downtown.
"You have to call a cab and wait like sometimes an hour or longer," said Allie Scheffer, a UNCW sophomore.
Students say whether you take a cab, or drive, getting downtown isn't easy.
"Parking is frustrating, it's expensive," said Gail Threatt, a UNCW sophmore.
"You have to call your friends, find out who will organize it, find a D.D.," said Elbridge Boardman, a UNCW student.
Wilmington Shuttle representatives say they saw a need in the area and wanted to help cut down on drinking and driving. At this point they plan to run routes from 5pm until 1am every hour. They are hoping to be able to charge $5 per ride.
Representatives say it won't just help out UNCW students, but anyone living in major apartment complexes. If all goes well, they plan to expand the service to Monkey Junction and the Ogden areas.
The company hasn't spoken with UNCW yet, but says they plan on meeting with the school in the future, so they can make sure the bus stops are in good areas. They say they already have a permit from the City of Wilmington.
UNCW says they cannot comment until they are approached by Wilmington Shuttle.
