WPD using social media to cut down crime

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -- The Wilmington Police Department is using a new strategy to cut down on crime using the popularity of social media.

Police officers are currently forming a social media team to brainstorm ideas on how to connect with the youth of our community over the internet.

Detective Kevin Smith, with the Wilmington Police Department says the police department is already online, putting this new initiative into effect.

Smith says their goal is to use web sites like Twitter and Facebook to connect with our youth and cut down on violence, drugs, and other crimes in our area.

"It's not a replacement for 911," said Smith.  "If someone sees a crime, they should still call 911.  But if they have a concern about anything that deals with law enforcement, then utilizing the technology they're comfortable with, that just makes sense."

Smith hopes that by using more social media, the police department will be able to better prevent crime in our community.
