NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A sweepstakes parlor in New Hanover County was served search warrants Thursday night, and according to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, two people were cited for illegal gaming machines.
Leo Daniels owns 777 Sweepstakes on Gordon Road, and he and Jonathan Bryant were cited.
A spokesman for the sheriff's office says 777 is the first establishment to be served search warrants.
Daniels tells WECT he was cited with running illegal gambling operations. He says sheriffs took out all of his sweepstakes machines, but not his computers.
The amount of machines confiscated has not been disclosed.
The North Carolina Supreme Court upheld a sweepstakes ban earlier this year, making the gambling cafes illegal.
We called Daniels for a comment, but he said he had to talk to his lawyer.
Sheriff Ed McMahon and District Attorney Ben David are taking this matter seriously and will prosecute anyone in violation of the law banning illegal gambling and gaming.
