SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – The search has started for a new city manager in Southport.
City leaders held a special meeting Wednesday night to discuss hiring a new manager as soon as possible.
To the surprise of man, current city manager Pat Thomas submitted his resignation to the board last week. He will leave in late April, according to the mayor.
Aldermen made the suggestion to appoint current city clerk Regina Alexander to the position, but Alexander explained to the board she would like to give someone else the opportunity to fill the position.
According to Southport Mayor Robert Howard, Alexander served as interim manager for about 14 months once before.
"We were very pleased with her work," he said.
Howard told WECT.com that they already have one person in mind to serve as an interim. He could not give any details into that candidate.
The board is currently accepting applications for a permanent manager.
