(RNN) - A university study of social media has produced the happiest and unhappiest cities and states in America.
The five unhappiest cities were Beaumont, TX, Albany, GA, Texas City, TX, Shreveport, LA, and Monroe, LA. Also making the list were Memphis, TN, Flint, MI, Montgomery, AL, and Dothan, AL.
The University of Vermont conducted a detailed investigation of correlations between real-time expressions of individuals made across the United States and a wide range of emotional, geographic, demographic, and health characteristics.
They combined a massive, geo-tagged data set comprising more than 80 million words generated during the course of several years on Twitter, and annually-surveyed characteristics of all 50 states and close to 400 urban populations.
According to the study, cities in the west are the most happy. The top five include Napa, CA, Longmont, CO, San Clemente, CA, Santa Fe, NM, and Santa Cruz, CA.
