PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Pender County Commissioners will consider giving the Sheriff's Office an extra $170,000 to use for overcrowding in the jail.
Because of overcrowding, inmates are housed at other facilities in different counties and Pender County has to pay a daily fee between $40 and $50.
In order to help maintain a safe environment for jail staff and other inmates, the Pender County Jail has had to increase the number of inmates kept in other counties.
The Sheriff's Office had budgeted $140,000 for this year to cover the costs, but are now anticipating needing another $170,000 through June.
Pender County Commissioners will discuss the issue at their meeting on Monday.
