Deputies said an Upstate man attacked his roommate with a crowbar after he thought she had thrown out his dead wife's ashes.
Union County deputies were called to 70-year-old Lewis O'Shields Jr's Lockhart Highway home in Monarch when a friend reported seeing him chase and hit his roommate with what looked like a tire iron about 2:15 p.m. on Friday.
Deputies said when they arrived, they spoke to O'Shields, who said he did not hit his roommate but he did have a crowbar. They said O'Shields told them he had tried to make her leave their home because he thought she had dumped the ashes.
When they spoke to his roommate, she told deputies that she was talking with a friend about two other relatives' recent deaths and were comparing the amount of ashes they received from the funeral home following the family members' cremations.
When they went to look at O'Shields' wife's ashes, they noticed the vase was empty, deputies said. The women told deputies they mentioned contacting the funeral home about the ashes when O'Shields walked up behind his roommate holding a crowbar.
O'Shields then swung at his roommate, hitting her on the elbow when she tried to block him, deputies said. They said she ran out of the house and O'Shields chased after her, swinging the crowbar.
Deputies said the friend looked out the window and was able to yell "watch out" before O'Shields could hit his roommate in the head. Following a brief struggle, deputies said his girlfriend was able to get away.
O'Shields was arrested and charged with assault and battery and later released from the county jail.
