NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Commissioners in New Hanover County voted in favor Monday of a proposed pay increase for the ABC Board.
Dan Sykes, CEO of the county's ABC operations, proposed an increase of $100 for board members and $150 for the chairman.
Since commissioners approved the proposed compensation change, ABC board members will now receive $250 per meeting and the chair will get $300.
Currently, $150 is the going rate for board members per meeting. County commissioners reduced it to that amount after controversy over the salary of former administrator Billy Williams. Then-Governor Bev. Perdue even signed into law a $150 cap that can only be modified by the board's controlling authority.
The money is much less compared to the cash collected by ABC board members in other counties. New Hanover ranks in the top three in the state when it comes to gross sales and profit percentages, making it a peer of Wake and Mecklenburg counties.
Wake County offers $200 for board members and $250 for the chairman and Mecklenburg hands out $500 for board members and $600 for the chair of the board, according to Sykes' agenda proposal.
