CANTON, OH (WOIO) -

The Canton Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Troopers say Christopher Dinger, 27 of Canton was pulled over on Cherry Street SE near US 30 for speeding and when the trooper got out of his patrol car, Dinger fled.

Dinger drove east on E. Tuscarawas Street for almost a mile, then lost control of the vehicle, slid off the road and struck the curb.

When the trooper pulled up to the crash, he saw Dinger running away from the car.  He was apprehended a short distance later.

The passenger of the car, 21-year-old Stephanie Casto of Canton was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.  She was transported to Aultman Hospital where she later died.

Dinger suffered minor injuries.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Dinger was transported to the Canton Post of the Highway Patrol where he submitted to a breath test resulting in .088 BAC.  He was also under a driver's license suspension.

Dinger is charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana after the drugs were found in the vehicle.  Dinger also had a warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear in court.

The crash remains under investigation and additional charges are expected.  The Highway Patrol is working with the Canton City Prosecutors Office.
