'Girl Rising' film could come to Wilmington, with a little help

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teen activist shot by the Taliban is just an example of third world country kids trying to fight the barriers put up against them when it comes to getting an education. Girls, especially, have to fight at the chance to sit in a classroom.

Social activists and film makers involved with the movie Girl Rising are fighting to spread awareness of this issue to every theater in America. So far it has hit venues like the Sundance Film Festival. A-list celebrities like Meryl Streep narrate the stories of nine female lives affected by this fight.

There is a chance to bring this film to Wilmington in March, but ticket sales must hit at least 100 by February, 20 2013. The proceeds benefit girls all over the world trying to become educated.

If there is enough interest, the film will show March 7, 2013 at Regal Mayfaire Cinema 16.
