Virginia Tech drops Diamond Hawks 9-0

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Taylor Horan and Matt Dauby had three hits apiece as Virginia Tech slugged its way past UNCW, 9-0, in an eight-inning, rain-shortened contest on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Hokes, who have scored 27 in three games, improved to 3-0 on the season with the win after also beating No. 31 Kent State, 8-1, in the first game of the day. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped to 1-1.

Gary Schneider was the catalyst for the Hokies, scoring three runs while being hit by two pitches and belting a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

On the mound, Devin Burke (1-0) held the Seahawks to a hit over six shutout innings. He finished with two walks and struck out six.

Jordan Ramsey (0-1) was saddled with the loss after struggling through 4 and 2/3 innings. Ramsey allowed five runs on five hits, three walks and three hit batters.

Sean Keselica also homered for the Hokies.

Michael Bass, Christian Wolfe and Drew Farber each had a hit for the Seahawks, who were outhit, 12-3.

The Seahawks will play two games tomorrow starting with a 10 a.m. start against Kent State followed by a 1:30 start against Virginia Tech.

Notes: UNCW has just six hits its first two games … The Seahawks last home shutout was against St. John's, 3-0, on Feb. 29, 2011 … Leadoff hitter have reached safely in 12 of 18 innings against UNCW pitchers … Virginia Tech collected seven 2-out RBI's on the game … UNCW still leads its all-time series with Virginia Tech, 10-9.
