WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department selected Officer Kendall Murphy as the department's first female K-9 officer, according to a news release.
Officer Murphy started with the department in Nov. 2005 where she was a police cadet. She has been with the patrol division for the past five years until her selection.
Officer Murphy will also have a new partner, K-9 Diablo, originally from Europe.
K-9 Unit Supervisor Sergeant Kevin Johnson says it is normal procedure to assign a new handler to a new K-9 so that both the handler and the dog learn together and form the bond together that makes a truly effective law enforcement team.
According to Officer Murphy, Diablo is fantastic to work with and is learning very quickly, especially in basic movement commands.
