WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –Many are talking about President Obama's proposal to increase the minimum wage just hours after he proposed it.

Obama talked about his plan to increase the wage from $7.25 to $9 on Tuesday night.

House Speaker John Boehner told reporters on Wednesday that he was against the proposal.

"I've been dealing with the minimum wage issue for the last 28 years that I've been in elected office," said Boehner. "And when you raise the price of employment, guess what happens?  You get less of it."

Many people that we spoke with said the increase is just what they need.

"It's going to go right back into the economy so people are going to be spending it on living costs or paying off debts or medical costs," said Laura Subik.

WECT.com met up with a local veteran who makes about 20 cents more than minimum wage.

"I would really like to see it happen," said veteran Joseph Klus.

Klus currently works at Hardees and has to live with family in order to make ends meet.
