CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - The Carolina Beach Boardwalk Makeover Group is changing its focus.
For the past five years, the group has been working to revitalize the boardwalk at the beach.
Volunteers spent countless hours making improvements to the area, which included repainting buildings, picnic tables and park benches, as well as adding signage and better landscaping.
The venture helped attract more businesses to the boardwalk.
The group has also planned special events to bring visitors to Carolina Beach, including Tuesday Family Night, Wednesday Bingo, Thursday Night Entertainment and Christmas By The Sea.
At its meeting Tuesday night, Carolina Beach town leaders heard from Dan Wilcox, a former member of council, who spearheaded efforts to beautify the boardwalk.
Wilcox said the Makeover Group is changing its name to Carolina Beach Downtown Initiative. He said they are continuing their efforts on the boardwalk. However, they're also extending their focus to the rest of the downtown district, by adding new lamppost fixtures, cigarette butt canisters and billboards.
To kick off their new efforts, they're meeting from 2-5 p.m. on Feb. 17 at the Lazy Pirate.
