WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Businesses in Downtown Wilmington getting a jump start on Mardi Gras.

On Sunday, a band played outside the shops of the Cotton Exchange, stores offered specials and discounts all weekend.

The festivities included a magic show, face painting, and a traditional king cake for people to eat.

People working in the shops say it was a lot of fun and a great way to boost business.

"It's definitely nice, it's very pretty and the music is nice," said Frances Guevara, who works at PureLife. "Being able to walk out and see all the decorations, it's definitely been a lot of fun here at the Cotton Exchange."

This was the first year for the event.
