WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - In a little less than a month from now, downtown Wilmington is going to transform into a sea of pink -- the Inaugural Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is taking place March 2.

You've seen this event happen in cities all across the country, but this is a first for the Wilmington area, and organizers say the event is going to be huge, especially for breast cancer survivors and their family and friends.

Anyone is welcome to run or walk, and there will be a one-mile run as well, along with a Kid's Dash for children 3-5.

Leigh Johnson heads up the local Susan G. Komen program that started in April of last year. She says about 2,500 people are expected to participate in the race, adding that that's actually a small number because it's the first year.

"Well, we also do the Triangle race and have about 20,000 people who come to that race, so we're much smaller-scale," said Johnson.

So far, 700 people have already registered.

The run and walk will start at Second and Market streets and snake its way through downtown.

Johnson says the race is an experience no participant will ever forget.

"The biggest thing about the event is the survivor's celebration, and that's why we're there; to honor the survivors and to remember those we've lost," she said.

Registration starts at 7 a.m., with a continental breakfast for breast cancer survivors

The race begins at 8:30 a.m.

The survivors' celebration, which is said to be very touching, starts at 10:30 a.m.
