Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame announces 2013 class

Posted: Updated:

The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame is set to welcome five new members.

Kenny Gattison, Thell Overman (Posthumously), Martin "Glenn" Sasser, and Maggie Will will all be inducted during the May ceremony.

Gattison made a name for himself on the basketball court while at New Hanover high school. He went on to play in the NBA for the Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Hornets and Vancouver Grizzlies.

Thell Overman was recognized by the NCHSAA as one of the top 50 contributors to high school sports.  As a coach for more than 42 years his teams won more than 1,000 games.

High school football players and fans have Glenn Sasser to thank for the BB&T Football Jamboree. Sasser started the event in 1987 and it's now recognized as the largest in North Carolina.  Sasser was drafted by the New York Jets in 1964 and later coached at both New Hanover and Laney where he was the first football coach in program history.

Whiteville native Maggie Will is currently the women's golf coach at the University of Richmond. The three-time LPGA Tour winner was a member of the UNCW coaching staff under Cindy Ho.
