NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students who helped solve a missing persons case are now certified in law enforcement.
The class at Cape Fear Community College helped police find the body of 83-year-old Alma Lawson last month, discovering her remains along some railroad tracks in Wilmington.
Members of WPD spoke at Monday night's graduation for the basic law enforcement training program.
Captain Jeff Allsbrook retold the events of that day - one that the sixteen students will likely never forget. He told the class and their families in the crowd that law enforcement is not always about catching the bad guy - that it's a public service job - so it's important to strive for helping others.
Though the outcome was tragic, Allsbrook says what happened that day was the first time these now certified men and women could help someone. What's more - it was a team effort.
A spokesperson for the college says the course is always in high demand.
