Retired highway patrol officer indicted in father/son shooting

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A grand jury indicted Herbert Paul Weissinger of Elizabethtown on Monday. He's accused of shooting a father and son on Christmas Eve.

Weissinger was indicted on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, according to court officials.

WECT.com uncovered that Weissinger is a retired Highway Patrol officer. He joined the Patrol in 1980 and retired at the rank of lieutenant in 2007, according to NC State Highway Patrol.

Weissinger is accused of shooting Thomas Daughety Jr, 42, in the stomach and his father, 64, in the hand.

The Bladen County Sheriff's Office said the two men were shot after a dispute over possible trespassing near Beards Chapel Loop Road.
