WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore Shae Kelley scored 19 points and added 17 rebounds to lead Old Dominion to a 62-55 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action Sunday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Lady Monarchs improved to 15-6 overall and 6-3 in CAA play while the Seahawks slipped to 2-17 and 1-7 as they suffered their sixth straight setback.
Kelley recorded her sixth double-double of the season to pace an ODU lineup that made just 20 of 64 field goal attempts (.313) for the game, including just 2-of-15 (.133) tries from 3-point range. Senior Jackie Cook chipped in 13 points to join Kelley in double figures while senior Mairi Buchan and freshman Galaisha Goodhope finished with eight points apiece.
Three players – seniors Tawanna Lee and Karneshia Garrett and sophomore Dana Brown – tallied 13 points each to pace UNCW. Garrett and fellow senior Chelsea McGowen pulled down 10 rebounds apiece to lead the Seahawks' effort on the glass.
Trailing 42-31 at the 14:48 mark of the second half, a layup by Kelley sparked a 23-9 spurt that lasted just over eight minutes and put the Lady Monarchs in front, 54-51. ODU did a majority of its damage during the spurt from the free-throw line, knocking down 11 of 12 attempts from the charity stripe.
Back-to-back layups by Atkins and McGowen ended the Lady Monarchs spurt and put the Seahawks back in front, 55-54, only to see the Lady Monarchs convert on its next three trips down the floor to make it a 60-55 contest with 4:20 left to play.
The two teams would go close to four minutes between points before Goodhope would split a pair of trips to the free throw line in the final minute to determine the seven-point margin.
In the first half, ODU held an 11-4 lead when a layup by McGowen sparked a 28-9 spurt that put the Seahawks in front, 32-20, with 4:37 remaining.
The Lady Monarchs responded, tallying 11 of the next 15 points to make it a 36-31 contest at the 17:09 mark of the second half.
UNCW rattled off six unanswered points to regain their double-digit lead, 42-31, and set up the Lady Monarchs' game-changing run.
Both teams return to action Tuesday. UNCW hosts Hofstra while Old Dominion travels to George Mason. Both contests are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
