Lady Seahawks come up short against Tribe

UNCW press release

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - William and Mary built a 12-point cushion late in the game and survived a furious comeback by UNCW for a 63-61 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory Thursday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Tribe avenged a nine-point loss to the Seahawks on Jan. 8 in Williamsburg and improved to 5-15 overall and 3-5 in the CAA with their third straight victory. The Seahawks lost for the fifth consecutive game and fell to 2-16 and 1-6.

Senior guard Taylor Hilton led three W&M players in double figures with 15 points. Senior forward Emily Correal added 12 points and senior guard Janine Aldridge netted 11.

Senior forward Karneshia Garrett scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double and her sixth of the season. Senior guard Tawanna Lee added 13 points, junior guard Jessica Freeman scored 12 and freshman guard Dana Brown finished with 11 as UNCW featured four in double digits for the first time this season.

After the Tribe went up by 12 points with 6:39 remaining, the Seahawks sliced the lead to four points with one minute left and W&M missed the front end of two one-and-one situations to leave the door open.

Freeman then drained a triple from the right corner with 37 seconds on the clock, but W&M worked the clock down and rebounded a miss by Aldridge with one second remaining. Reserve MacKenzie Morgan then made the second of two free throws to end the game.

W&M started the second half strong by making five of their first seven shots to regain the lead. Sophomore playmaker Anna Kestler opened the half going 3-of-4 from the field and a pair of free throws by Correal at 10:21 gave the Tribe a 50-44 edge.

The Seahawks, meanwhile, struggled from the field early in the second half, shooting 5-of-16 and missing five three-point attempts as W&M took control.

A jump shot by forward Kaitlyn Mathieu with 7:25 left gave the Tribe its biggest lead of the half, 58-46, before UNCW made its final push.

UNCW went into the locker room with a one point lead over the Tribe, 33-32, after posting its highest output of the season in the opening period. Lee led the Seahawks in scoring with 11 points in the first half, while the team shot 6-of-9 from the free throw line. The Tribe ended the first half going 11-of-38 from the field.

After taking an early 4-3 lead with 17:13 left in the opening half, the Tribe went cold, shooting 4-of-20 from the field and 1-of-7 beyond the arc. The Seahawks capitalized on the W&M shooting woes with a 9-0 run to build a 20-9 advantage.

W&M fought back to go ahead, 32-28, but Lee sank a trey and Brown made two free throws to give the Seahawks a slim 33-32 lead at the break.. .

UNCW is on the road for its next game at Old Dominion on Sunday, playing a televised contest at 3 p.m. in Norfolk, Va. W&M entertains James Madison on Sunday in a 2 p.m. tip.
