Local lawmakers co-sponsor bill to keep gun permits confidential

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Two local legislators have co-sponsored a bill that would keep gun permit information out of public view.

Rep. Frank Iler of Brunswick County and Rep. Chris Millis of Pender County are among 33 co-sponsors of HB 17, the Gun Permits Restaurants and Confidentiality Bill. The two-page bill includes the working that "..the list of permit holders and the information collected by the sheriff to process an application for a permit are confidential and are not a public record….". The bill also says the local sheriff "shall make the list of permit holders and the permit information available upon request to all State and local law enforcement agencies".

The bill would also allow concealed weapon permit holders to bring their guns into restaurants where alcohol is served, unless there's a notice prohibiting them from doing so. A similar provision was debated in 2011 but ultimately did not remain in a gun-carry bill that ultimately became law.

HB 17 was sent to the Committee on Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House.  Rep. Susi Hamilton of New Hanover County and Rep. William Brisson of Bladen County are members of that committee.
